This weekend, the small Cumbrian town of Keswick becomes the outdoor sports capital of the UK. The Keswick Mountain Festival — running May 15-17 — packs 18 competitive events, a full speaker programme, and live music into three days against the backdrop of the Lake District's fells, lakes, and valleys.

If you are anywhere near the north of England this weekend, this is where you should be.

The Events

The festival covers more ground — literally and figuratively — than any single-sport event could.

Trail Running is the headline discipline. Events range from a 5K trail run to a 50K ultra marathon, with half marathons, 10K mountain runs, and dawn/dusk runs filling the gaps. The courses wind through some of the Lake District's most dramatic terrain — Skiddaw, Blencathra, and the ridgelines above Derwentwater.

Cycling features the Back O'Skiddaw sportives — 72km and 100km routes that combine rolling roads, sharp Cumbrian climbs, and panoramic views of the fells. These are not flat festival rides. The 100km route includes serious elevation and rewards strong climbers.

Open Water Swimming takes place in Derwentwater with distances from 750m to 3.6km. The lake is cold, clean, and surrounded by fells that make every stroke feel epic. Junior swim races are also available for younger athletes.

The Keswick Conqueror is the multi-discipline challenge — a sprint triathlon format that combines running, cycling, and swimming across the festival weekend.

The Speakers

The festival's speaker programme is worth the trip alone.

Jasmin Paris — the ultra-running legend who became the first woman to finish the Barkley Marathons in 2024 — headlines the main stage. Paris's story of endurance, determination, and sheer toughness resonates far beyond running, and her talks consistently draw packed audiences.

Alan Hinkes — the first Briton to summit all fourteen 8,000-metre peaks — will share stories from the Himalayas. Kim Collison, one of the UK's top fell runners, and David Walsh, the journalist whose investigation brought down Lance Armstrong, are also on the programme.

Connect with training partners, earn travel miles, and discover terrain worth crossing borders for.

Why Keswick Works

The genius of the Keswick Mountain Festival is that it brings together athletes from completely different disciplines in one place. Trail runners meet cyclists. Swimmers meet hikers. The cross-pollination of sports, stories, and experiences creates an energy that single-sport events cannot match.

The festival village — with live music from Beans on Toast and the Peatbog Faeries, food stalls, and gear exhibitors — provides the social hub between events. Entry to a sports event includes full access to the village, speakers, and music.

Keswick itself is one of the great outdoor towns in England. The pubs are walker-friendly, the gear shops are stocked by people who actually use the equipment, and the surrounding fells offer world-class terrain within walking distance of the high street.

Getting There and What to Know

Keswick is in the northern Lake District, roughly 4.5 hours from London by car or train to Penrith then bus. Accommodation books fast during festival weekend — campsites, B&Bs, and holiday cottages in the surrounding valleys are the best options.

Entry to individual events is still available for some disciplines. Check the festival website for remaining places. A festival-only ticket provides access to the village, speakers, and music without competing.
