The Waves That Changed Everything
The Mentawai Islands sit 150 kilometers off the west coast of Sumatra in a swell window that intercepts Indian Ocean energy with almost no interference. The result is a chain of islands surrounded by some of the most perfect, consistent waves on the planet. Lance's Right, Macaronis, Hollow Trees, Rifles — these are names that every serious surfer knows, and they deliver exactly what the reputation promises.
Getting here is part of the experience. There are no airports on the islands. You either take a 10-hour overnight ferry from Padang or, more commonly, book a surf charter boat that becomes your floating base camp for 10-14 days. You wake up, check the swell, and motor to whichever break is firing. It is surf exploration in its purest form.
The Waves
Macaronis is the wave that most surfers dream about. A perfect left-hand point break that reels for 200 meters over a flat reef, producing mechanical barrels that seem almost too perfect to be real. On a good day, every wave is a tube ride. On a great day, the tubes are head-high and flawless.
Lance's Right (also called HTs or Hollow Trees) is the power wave. A right-hand barrel that throws hard over shallow reef, demanding commitment and precise positioning. This is not a wave for hesitation. When it is on, Lance's Right is one of the best tubes in Indonesia.
Rifles, Kandui Left, Bank Vaults, and dozens of other breaks spread across the island chain offer variety for every swell direction and tide. Part of the magic of a boat trip is the flexibility to chase conditions across the archipelago.

Most surfers visit the Mentawais on charter boats ranging from budget to luxury. A standard 10-day trip includes meals, guides, a tender boat for transfers to the lineup, and access to multiple breaks per day. You sleep on the boat, eat on the boat, and spend your days surfing, snorkeling, and recovering.
The isolation is real. Phone signal is intermittent at best. The rhythm of the days is set entirely by the ocean — tide, swell, wind. After a few days, the outside world fades completely. It is one of the most immersive surf experiences available anywhere.
What You Need to Know
The Mentawai waves break over coral reef, often in shallow water. Reef cuts, hold-downs, and powerful currents are part of the deal. This is not a beginner destination. Confident intermediate to advanced surfers will have the time of their lives. Bring reef booties, a good first aid kit, and the fitness to surf 4-6 hours a day for a week straight.
Water temperature is warm year-round. A rashguard or thin wetsuit top is plenty. The sun is equatorial and intense — serious sun protection is essential.
