Eight hundred riders from more than fifty countries arrived in Slovenia this past week for the UEC Road European Championships, the first time the event has been held in the country. The course wound from Ljubljana through Škofja Loka, Kranj and Kamnik before climbing toward Šenčur, finishing on the selective slopes of Možjanca.

The men's elite road race came down to a photo finish. Remco Evenepoel and Italy's Giulio Ciccone rode clear together over the final ascent of Možjanca, extending their lead as the rest of the field fell away behind them. In the closing kilometers, Ciccone refused to take his turn at the front, and Evenepoel grew visibly frustrated as the gap held. Ciccone used the inside line into the final corner and looked, for a moment, like he had the win secured. Evenepoel found just enough in the sprint to take it at the line.

Demi Vollering won the women's elite race outright, finishing nearly solo after a race that thinned out well before the final kilometers. Tadej Pogačar, still recovering from surgery after a crash at the Vuelta a España, was absent from the men's field, unable to defend the title he won the year before. Primož Roglič finished tenth.

The championships are not yet finished. The team time trial relay runs tomorrow, October 6, and the individual time trials close the week on October 7.
