The Reserve

In 2011, Ericeira became the first place in Europe — and only the second in the world — to receive World Surfing Reserve status. The designation protects a 4-kilometer stretch of coastline containing seven world-class waves, ensuring that the breaks, the water quality, and the surrounding environment remain intact for future generations.

But Ericeira is not a museum. It is a living, breathing surf town where the lineup is full every morning, the cafes buzz with post-surf energy, and the smell of grilled fish drifts through narrow cobblestone streets. The fishing village heritage runs deep, and the surf culture that has grown around it feels organic rather than manufactured.

The Waves

Ribeira d'Ilhas is the crown jewel — a right-hand point break that produces long, workable walls perfect for progressive surfing. It hosts WSL events and works across a wide range of swell and tide conditions. On a clean day, the wave peels for 200 meters with multiple sections for turns and barrels.

Coxos is the heavy one. A powerful right that breaks over rock and reef, producing tubes that demand respect and experience. When Coxos is on, it is one of the best waves in Europe. It is also one of the most localized — earn your spot with patience and respect.

Foz do Lizandro and São Julião offer more forgiving conditions for intermediate surfers and beginners. Beach breaks with sandy bottoms and consistent small-to-medium waves make them ideal learning grounds. Multiple surf schools operate along this stretch.

Ericeira has managed to grow its surf reputation without losing its soul. The old town center retains its whitewashed walls, tile facades, and fishing boat harbors. Restaurants serve fresh-caught seafood at prices that would be unthinkable in most European surf towns. A plate of grilled sardines with a cold Sagres overlooking the ocean costs less than a sandwich in Biarritz.

The skate scene is strong too. Several skateparks dot the area, and the crossover between surf and skate culture gives Ericeira a creative, youthful energy. Surf shops, board shapers, and creative studios line the main streets.
